Google Maps Search

[Addendum - 15/08/2016]: This no longer works. My apologies. It would appear that Google have removed from their Map Gallery the mechanism by which it was possible to search for maps. None of the search descriptions I've listed below apply any longer, and their associated links embedded therein will not function as I have outlined here. As far as I can see there no longer is a search mechanism in Google Maps Gallery. You will note that the search criteria entry text box has been removed. It's difficult to imagine what the thinking behind this was. I see no obvious means by which I can now provide what I described below. The only option that I think I can now provide is to direct you to my Route Locator - Robert Slack map on Google, which is an index of all my maps and their geographic location. I have provided to Google feedback regarding the demise of this mechanism. If anything should change regarding this, I will update this web page.

Google Maps Gallery Search - Feedback: 15.08.2016 @ 10.54

I provide on my blog site a link to 'My Maps' (https://maps.google.com/gallery/search?hl=en&q=ukrobertslack&=). I tag all my maps with my 'ukrobertslack' identifier within the each map description. In the past this link would show on Google Maps Gallery all my public maps such that a viewer might browse these. I note that this no longer works. I also note that the search entry text box has been removed. I assume that the mechanism to allow a selection of Google maps to be viewed in this manner no longer exists. I think this is an unfortunate loss of what was a very useful facility. No longer does there exist a mechanism within Google Maps by which an owner of a set of maps can present a list of these to a member of the public. I feel this is a significant shortcoming in the current Google Maps service.

I publish a map on Google Maps for each of my walk and cycle trips. These can be searched and browsed using Google Maps Gallery. I've provided below a number of Google Map Gallery search examples which give a flavour of how this facility can be used to find maps of interest.

  1. Search for all of my public route maps on Google Maps:
    'ukrobertslack'
  2. Search for Cycle route maps published in 2015:
    'ukrobertslack cycle 2015'
Note: Replace 'cycle' with 'walk' for Walk route maps
  3. Search for route maps in the vicinity of Tiverton:
    'ukrobertslack Tiverton'
Note: The search result set includes maps that contain 'Tiverton' in the map title or description, and also maps that are within the geographic vicinity of Tiverton.
  4. Search for a route map published on a specific date:
    'ukrobertslack 14.06.2015
  5. Search for routes on my Route Locator:
    'ukrobertslack route locator'
Note: The search result is a single map, my Route Locator map, which once opened, can be used to browse a summary form of all my route maps. Links navigate you to detailed route maps.
If you should experience any difficulties with this Google Maps Search facility, or have any suggestions about how I might improve the identification of my maps, then please do write to me with your comments using my Contact Form.
